Andy Hiett, MD

AUTHOR OF STEP 101, SPEAKER, TUTOR, SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIAN

My experience as a teacher began as a senior in college when I worked for a company specializing in MCAT preparation. Following Step 1, I had gained insights that I wanted to share with others so I signed up to teach small groups of younger medical students preparing for Step 1. I went on to serve as a 1-on-1 USMLE tutor during my first year of residency. Overall, I have spent over 500 hours helping students prepare for MCAT, USMLE and COMLEX exams.

When I started working with younger medical students, I quickly realized that everyone has their own way of learning the content piece which makes up about 75-80% of your score on USMLE and COMLEX exams. However, I also realized there was an ideal way to approach questions that gave you the best chance to arrive at the correct answer. The right approach and test taking skills can be worth 20-25% of the exam score but they aren't being routinely taught in medical schools across the country. This book is meant to show you how to tackle these overlooked aspects of USMLE and COMLEX exams. This book will save you time and reduce anxiety by providing a roadmap to your goal score with strategies and techniques that anyone can implement. I believe these lessons and insights should be available to all students at an affordable price.

Whenever someone offered me advice for Step, my first instinct was to ask what their scores were. For transparency’s sake, my scores were 256 on Step 1, 263 on Step 2 and 240 on Step 3. The information presented in my book is a culmination of self-studying as well as my experience teaching over the years.

I graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2020. I completed Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. I completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Washington and now work as a Sports Medicine Physician at the University of Kansas Medical Center. My goal is to continue working closely with medical students and residents in my future career.

OUR VISION FOR YOU

USMLE exams are difficult but they are even harder when you don't have all the information and resources you need to succeed.

As a private USMLE tutor I was always frustrated by how many students couldn't afford the help they needed. I founded Step 101 with affordability and accessibility in mind. My goal is to share the knowledge I gained at an affordable price you so you can reach your potential!

  • "I absolutely recommend this book for USMLE Step 1 preparation! This resource is so helpful, emphasizing not only comprehensive content review but also the often overlooked aspect of test-taking strategy. I have focused predominantly on content in my studies so far, but this book's insights on strategic approaches were really eye-opening. It's also a fairly quick read, so it's not too overwhelming!"

Selena, University of Texas Health San Antonio

  • "I found the book to be extremely valuable. It provides a unique perspective to studying for board exams that you will not find in your Q banks, textbooks, or other study resources. The book does not teach you exam content, it teaches you test-taking strategies, AKA how to use the content you already know to choose the correct answer on the test."

Emily Tufford, Penn State College of Medicine

  • "I thought it provided great insight to both test preparation and test taking. Some of my favorite parts were the first section regarding resources, test prep and schedules. I know I am currently stressed about forming a study schedule that's rigorous enough but attainable and I think you mapped it out really well. I also really enjoyed the flow chart on page 49 about how to review a question block."

Emily Frye, University of Kansas School of Medicine

  • "Overall highly recommend. My biggest takeaway was how important strategy is. The focus is usually on the content and learning the material but for me learning about test-taking strategy was incredibly helpful. I wish I had read this at the beginning of second year or in the summer between M1 and M2."

Kennedy Dawson, Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine

  • "I started working with Dr. Hiett after multiple failed attempts at STEP 1. He was nonjudgmental about my previous struggles and very conscientious about seeking out new methods to effectively study exam material and develop testing strategies. Dr. Hiett encouraged me to try new STEP 1 prep resources and helped me utilize the question bank that best suited my needs. We also worked together to establish an efficient study schedule and met regularly to discuss my progress. In general, my experience working with Dr. Hiett boosted my confidence in myself, my command of the material, and my readiness to sit for the exam even after having difficulty with prior attempts. I ultimately passed my exam and am grateful for the guidance and direction he provided me!"

  • "I just wanted to reach out to let you know how much your book has helped me! I started UWorld for Step 1 about 3 months ago and your strategies have helped me improve my scores tremendously. I’ve also become more confident while going through answer choices."
